New Technologies

The project funding of the Federal Government in the field of new technologies supports projects in the following areas: Information and communication technologies, materials innovation and nanotechnology, optical technologies as well as production and manufacturing technologies.

In the field of new technologies projects are funded in the entire spectrum of high-technologies. One of the most important future technology is the nanotechnology. The possible applications of this technology are immense. Future progress in nanotechnology will  determine the further development of future-oriented branches. The Federal Ministry of Research has presented a new overall strategy for this area. Four lead innovations with great economic potential to provide special leverage for growth and employment in order to develop the application potential of nanotechnology for the important industries in Germany have been funded so far. These industries are the automobile industry, the optical industry, the pharmaceuticals industry as well as medical technology and electronics. These are: NanoMobil / automobile industry,  NanoLux  / optical industry, NanoFab/ electronics and Nanobiotechnology / life sciences.

  • ICT 2020 Research Programm

Within the framework of the High-Tech Strategy for Germany, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will provide project funding for ICT research worth around € 1.5 billion until 2011 with the research programme ICT 2020.

  • Development of Convergent ICT/Multimedia

The funding priority "Development of Convergent ICT" emerged from "Multimedia". It is part of the action programme of the Federal Government "iD2010 - Information Society Germany 2010". The aim is to fund the development and pilot testing of innovative ICT-based applications with high application and transfer potential for medium-sized enterprises.

  • Microsystems Framework Programme

Developments in microsystems technology must be rapidly translated into products and marketed so that German industry can maintain and enhance its leading position in international competition. The Framework Programme "Microsystems" was initiated in February 2004. Until 2009, BMBF will fund the development of microsystems technology with around € 260 million.

  • Framework Programme "Optical Technologies"

Optical technologies stand for growth and economic success "made in Germany". This means competitiveness, economic growth and employment in Germany. The BMBF supports optical technologies through comprehensive funding measures. A branch of high technology has developed around the different forms of use, which has brought about many innovations. Education initiatives are also of outstanding importance, as there is a shortage of qualified young scientists in the still young area of optical technologies.

  • Production Research

The BMBF supports research on new production technologies with the aim of developing model solutions for sustainable production in Germany and providing research results for broad use particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Results of basic research in areas such as information technology, nanotechnology, new materials or microsystems are taken up by production technology to meet the demands of industrial production.

  • Materials Innovation for Industry and Society

The new funding programme "WING - Materials Innovations for Industry and Society" was published in early 2004. This is the first programme to integrate traditional materials research with the basic discipline of chemistry and with nanotechnology. The WING Programme integrates for the first time classical materials research with the basic discipline of chemistry and the future-oriented area of nanotechnology and focuses materials development, in particular, large sectors i.e. the automobile industry, mechanical engineering, IT industry, electrical/electronics industry and chemical industry.

  • Nanotechnology

The innovation initiative "Nanotechnology Conquers Markets" aims at pooling the aspects of nanotechnology which are funded in the individual fields within an overall national strategy. Four lead innovations with great economic potential to provide special leverage for growth and employment in order to develop the application potential of nanotechnology for the important industries in Germany have been funded so far. These are: NanoMobil / automobile industry, NanoLux / optical industry, NanoFab/ electronics and Nano for Life / life sciences.

  • Framework Programme New Media in Education

The aim of the funding is a permanent and broad integration of new media as teaching, learning, working and communication tools in education and further training as well as the qualitative improvement of educational opportunities using these media. The funding programme was initiated in March 2000.
